A paradigm shift in psychology – from ‘talk’ to ‘experience’

“The more we learn about neuroscience, the more we realize that human beings aren’t driven by our ability to analyze and cogitate about our lives… The key word here is experience. In other words, as a growing body of research shows, deep change doesn’t come when clients just talk about their problems; it results from the impact of an emotionally arousing therapeutic experience on the structures and biochemistry of the brain.” – Rich SImon, Psychotherapy Networker

I see this as an essential paradigm shift in contemporary therapeutic practice, one which is especially proving itself in the emerging new range of modalities known as ‘energy psychology’. These modalities (of which EFT is a good example) are typically body-mind interventions which powerfully combine experiential emotional processing, with cognitive awareness to access and release subconscious blocks. The outcome is often a radically transformational experience resulting in a new sense of vitality and freedom.
